Toronto, Jun 21 (V7N) – Four-time world champions Germany came from behind to defeat Ivory Coast 2-1 in their third Group E match at the FIFA World Cup, securing a place in the knockout stage. Deniz Undav scored both goals for Germany as they became the third team after Mexico and the United States to qualify for the Round of 16.

The Group E encounter was played at Toronto Stadium in Canada in the early hours of Saturday (June 20), Bangladesh time.

Ivory Coast took the lead in the 30th minute when Frank Kessié capitalized on a rebound inside the penalty area to put the African side ahead.

Germany thought they had found the net twice before halftime, but both goals were ruled out. The second effort, scored by Kai Havertz, was disallowed after a foul on Ivory Coast defender Emmanuel Agbadou during the build-up. As a result, Ivory Coast carried a 1-0 advantage into the break.

Germany returned with renewed determination in the second half and found the equalizer in the 68th minute. Deniz Undav produced a composed finish from a well-delivered cross by Nadiem Amiri to level the score.

With the match seemingly heading for a draw, Undav struck again deep into stoppage time, scoring the winning goal to complete Germany's comeback and secure all three points.

Ivory Coast pushed forward in search of another equalizer during the closing stages, but Germany's defense held firm as the African side failed to convert several attacking opportunities.

The victory leaves Germany at the top of Group E with a perfect six points from two matches, while Ivory Coast remain second with three points.

The match also marked a historic milestone for Germany captain Manuel Neuer, who became the goalkeeper with the most appearances in FIFA World Cup history, making his 21st World Cup match to surpass France's Hugo Lloris. Germany's winning goal also brought their all-time FIFA World Cup goal tally to 241, drawing level with Brazil for the most goals scored in tournament history.
