Jhalakathi, Aug. 15 (V7N) — A friendly kabaddi match was held in Kathalia upazila of Jhalakathi on Friday as part of an initiative to revive rural sporting traditions and preserve the cultural heritage of Bangladesh’s villages.
The match, featuring married and unmarried local players, took place in the sandy field of North-Eastern Bashbunia Primary School on Friday afternoon.
In a closely contested and entertaining game, the unmarried team defeated the married side by one point to claim victory.
The event was presided over by Mohammad Badal Howlader. Mohammad Akhter Hossain Nizam Mirbahar, general secretary of the Kathalia upazila unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), attended the event as the chief guest. Mohammad Shafiqul Islam Babu coordinated the overall organisation of the competition.
Thousands of enthusiastic spectators from surrounding areas gathered at the Bashbunia school field from the afternoon to watch the traditional game. The crowd erupted in cheers and applause whenever either side scored a point, creating a festive atmosphere throughout the area.
Speaking at the event, Akhter Hossain Nizam Mirbahar described kabaddi as Bangladesh’s national sport and an important part of the country’s long-standing rural tradition.
He said such sporting events could help encourage young people to stay away from excessive mobile phone use and drugs while promoting healthy recreational activities.
He also praised the friendly competition between married and unmarried players as a positive example of community bonding.
At the conclusion of the match, players from both the winning and losing teams were presented with prizes and greeted by the organisers, bringing the festive event to a close.
