Sheffield, Oct 31 (V7N)- Sheffield United secured a 1-0 victory over Wrexham in the English Championship on Friday, October 30, thanks to a first-half goal from Chilean forward Ben Brereton Diaz at Bramall Lane.
Brereton Diaz scored his first goal of the season to secure all three points for Chris Wilder’s side. The victory marked Sheffield United’s third win in five matches, moving them to within one point of the top eight in the league standings.
Sheffield United have been working to recover from a disappointing start to the campaign, having won only one of their opening five league matches. Wrexham, meanwhile, suffered their fourth defeat in seven league games, continuing a difficult run of form.
Brereton Diaz Breaks the Deadlock
Before kick-off, spectators observed a Remembrance Day ceremony, during which The Last Post was played in tribute to those who lost their lives in military service.
The hosts began aggressively, with Jordan Ayew sending an early attempt narrowly wide. CD Peck also tested Wrexham goalkeeper Anthony Patterson with a low shot, but the effort was comfortably saved.
Sheffield United briefly lost midfielder Kalvin Phillips to an injury concern, although the former Leeds United player returned to the field after receiving treatment.
Wrexham registered their first attempt in the 24th minute through Lewis O’Brien, whose effort lacked the power to trouble the home side.
Sheffield United took the lead shortly afterwards. Captain Japhet Tanganga supplied the ball to Ayew inside the penalty area. Patterson blocked Ayew’s low shot, but Brereton Diaz reacted quickly to turn the rebound into the net.
Wrexham struggled to create clear chances during the remainder of the first half. In stoppage time, a timely challenge from Sheffield United defender Liam Kitching prevented an attempt by Rathbone from threatening the hosts’ goal.
Wrexham Push for an Equaliser
Wrexham returned after the break with greater attacking intent. Former Sheffield United striker Kieffer Moore came close, but his shot sailed over the crossbar.
The hosts also threatened to extend their advantage. Ayew collected a long kick from goalkeeper Michael Cooper and advanced towards the penalty area, only for Ben Sheaf to recover and make a crucial last-ditch tackle.
Sheffield United made a late substitution in the 86th minute, bringing off young winger Romelle Donovan, who is on loan from Brentford. Donovan received applause from the home supporters after producing several impressive dribbles.
His replacement, Tyrese Campbell, subsequently passed the ball to Peck outside the penalty area, but Patterson again kept out the low effort.
Wrexham launched a determined push for an equaliser during six minutes of added time. Substitute Danny Imray missed a late opportunity, sending his effort over the crossbar, while Sam Smith saw a header go straight into Cooper’s hands.
Sheffield United ultimately held on to their narrow lead, with Brereton Diaz’s first-half strike proving decisive.
