Dhaka, August 21 — Nazmul Hasan Papon, the long-serving President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), has resigned from his position, bringing an end to his decade-long tenure in the country’s cricket administration. Former national cricket team captain Farooq Ahmed has been appointed as the new BCB President.
The decision was made during a BCB board meeting held on Wednesday, where Papon joined online to announce his resignation. His departure marks the conclusion of a significant era in Bangladesh cricket, which saw substantial growth and development under his leadership. Papon, who was nominated as BCB President in 2012, was formally elected to the position in 2013 and had remained at the helm ever since.
Farooq Ahmed, who had been serving as a councillor on the cricket board, was chosen as Papon’s successor. His appointment as BCB President comes from his inclusion in the National Sports Council's quota as a director, a position that facilitated his rise to the leadership of the cricket board. Farooq’s experience as a former national team captain and his involvement in cricket administration were key factors in his selection.
This leadership transition occurs amidst significant political changes in Bangladesh. Nazmul Hasan Papon, who had close ties with the former ruling Awami League, lost his role as the Minister of Youth and Sports following the party's recent fall from power. In the interim government, Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan has been appointed as the new sports advisor, signaling a broader shift in the country's sports administration.
The BCB is expected to announce further details about the new leadership and its future plans in the coming days. Farooq Ahmed’s presidency marks a new chapter for Bangladesh cricket as the board looks to continue its progress on the international stage.
