Sept 17, V7N - U.S. gymnast Jordan Chiles has filed an appeal with the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland, challenging the decision that stripped her of her Olympic bronze medal in the women’s floor exercise at the Paris Games. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) had ruled in favor of Romanian gymnast Ana Maria Barbosu, who was awarded the bronze after successfully appealing that the U.S. team's inquiry into the scoring of Chiles's performance was filed four seconds past the deadline.

Barbosu’s appeal resulted in Chiles’s revised score being lowered, moving her out of third place behind Brazilian Rebeca Andrade (gold) and fellow American Simone Biles (silver). Chiles’s legal team argues that CAS ignored video evidence proving the inquiry was submitted within the allowed time. They also contend that Hamid Gharavi, president of the CAS panel, had a conflict of interest due to his long-standing legal ties to Romania.

Chiles’s lawyers further claim that she was not given sufficient notice before the CAS hearing, compromising her ability to mount a proper defense. They called the entire process "fundamentally unfair."

USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee have publicly supported Chiles in her appeal. A decision from the Swiss court is expected within four to six months. In response to the CAS ruling, Chiles expressed her disappointment but vowed to continue fighting for what she believes is a just outcome.
