Dhaka, Dec 02 (V7N) – Director General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr. Abu Zafar has linked the rising cases and deaths from dengue to insufficient attention toward the disease, despite its persistence due to climate change.

At a press conference held at the Health Directorate on Monday morning, Dr. Zafar explained that climate change has extended dengue's seasonal spread. However, the lack of timely focus and action has led to a significant increase in fatalities.

He noted that many patients delay seeking medical care until their condition becomes critical, contributing to higher mortality rates.

The DGHS chief reported that most dengue fatalities occur in Dhaka, particularly among those aged 20 to 40. Meanwhile, children and the elderly in Chittagong face an elevated risk of death due to dengue. He stressed that inadequate seriousness regarding the disease has worsened the situation.

Additionally, Dr. Zafar raised concerns about chikungunya and Zika viruses, although he assured the public that Zika poses minimal risk. He highlighted that 90% of Zika cases are asymptomatic and have a zero mortality rate but emphasized the need for continued awareness of all health threats.
