Rajshahi, August 5 (V7N) - A baby girl born with a rare congenital condition was delivered at around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Christian Mission Hospital in Billi Bazar area of Tanore Upazila in Rajshahi, Bangladesh. The infant has a single body but two separate faces, a condition medically known as craniofacial duplication (diprosopus), which is extremely rare.

Family members said the baby was immediately transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) for advanced care. Speaking to the press, RMCH spokesperson Dr. Shankar K. Roy clarified that the baby is not a case of conjoined twins but is suffering from a severe birth defect.

“The newborn has two faces—meaning four eyes, four ears, two noses, and two mouths—all on a single head and body,” Dr. Roy explained. “Cases like this are exceptionally rare. The child is currently under intensive observation, and our medical team is doing everything possible to sustain her life.”

According to global medical literature, craniofacial duplication is caused by abnormal activity in the protein signaling pathways during early embryonic development. Fewer than 50 such cases have been documented worldwide.

Hospital authorities have not confirmed whether surgical intervention will be possible, as the baby’s internal organ structure is yet to be fully assessed. The infant remains under close monitoring in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

The birth has drawn significant attention locally, with both medical professionals and members of the public expressing concern and sympathy for the newborn and her family.
