Stockholm, Oct 10 (V7N)- South Korean author Han Kang has been awarded the prestigious 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature , as announced by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on Thursday at 5 pm (Bangladesh time) from Stockholm, Sweden.

The Nobel Committee praised Han Kang for her "profound poetic prose," recognizing her unique ability to explore themes of human fragility and the oppression of ordinary people in earlier eras. Her work has gained international acclaim for its emotional depth and philosophical insight, combining lyrical beauty with stark reality.

Han Kang’s literary contributions have made a significant impact worldwide, and this Nobel Prize solidifies her place among the greats of contemporary literature.

This recognition follows last year's award to Norwegian author and playwright Jon Fosse , who was honored for his work that vividly captures the unsaid and the unspoken, revealing human complexities in a subtle yet powerful manner.

The Nobel Prize in Literature , first awarded in 1901 to French poet and essayist Sully Prudhomme , has now honored 120 writers over the years. It remains one of the most prestigious global awards in literature.

The Nobel Prizes, established by Swedish scientist Alfred Nobel , are awarded annually in five categories: physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and peace, with an additional economics prize added in 1969 . The announcements of the Nobel laureates began on October 7 with the prize in medicine, followed by physics and chemistry.

The Nobel Peace Prize , often regarded as one of the most anticipated awards, will be announced on October 11 .
