Dhaka, Dec 12 (V7N)- Bangladesh has been ranked among the nine most dangerous countries for journalists in 2024, alongside war-torn Palestine, Pakistan, and Mexico, according to a report by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

Global Toll on Journalists

The report reveals that as of December 1, 2024, a total of 54 journalists were killed while performing their duties or due to their profession. Palestine, at the top of the list, witnessed 18 journalist deaths, with 16 killed in Gaza and two in Lebanon, primarily by Israeli forces.

Pakistan ranked second, with seven journalist deaths, while Bangladesh and Mexico followed, each reporting five journalist deaths.

Hostages and Missing Journalists

The report also highlights that 55 journalists are currently being held hostage worldwide, with 25 of them detained by the Islamic State (IS). Additionally, 95 journalists were reported missing in 2024, with four new cases added this year.

Imprisonment Statistics

The three countries with the highest number of imprisoned journalists are:

  • China: 124 journalists
  • Myanmar: 61 journalists
  • Israel: 41 journalists

Challenges for Journalists in Bangladesh

The inclusion of Bangladesh in this list underscores the increasing risks faced by journalists in the country, ranging from physical threats to restrictions on press freedom. Advocacy groups and media organizations have repeatedly called for stronger protections for journalists and accountability for crimes against them.
