Nagarakurnool, Feb 23 (V7N) – A section of a tunnel under construction in Telangana, India, collapsed on Saturday, trapping at least eight workers, authorities confirmed.
The incident took place at the Srisailam Left Bank Canal Project, near the Srisailam Dam in Nagarakurnool district, according to The Indian Express.
Cause of the Collapse
Police reports suggest that the collapse occurred while workers were repairing a leak inside the tunnel. Several workers managed to escape, but eight remain trapped inside.
Local officials reported that the tunnel collapsed over a 10-meter section, spreading mud across 200 meters, making rescue operations more challenging.
Rescue Efforts Intensify
Rescue teams, including disaster response units and local authorities, are racing against time to reach the trapped workers. Heavy machinery is being used to clear debris and establish communication with those inside.
Government Response
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy expressed condolences and ordered immediate rescue operations.
Authorities remain hopeful of a successful rescue, though the extent of damage and potential casualties remain unclear.
