Washington, Apr 21 (V7N)- Former U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed optimism that a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine could be reached within this week, though he did not clarify the conditions under which such an agreement might come about.

Posting on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump claimed that both nations would benefit economically by resuming trade relations with the United States, suggesting that prosperity could follow if peace is achieved.

“They will trade with the U.S., make a lot of money, and become prosperous,” Trump wrote.

Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the war has shown little sign of resolution. Despite repeated calls for peace, fighting continues across several frontlines.

Trump’s remarks come just days after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a short ceasefire for Easter. However, both Moscow and Kyiv have since accused each other of violating the truce.

Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi reported ongoing drone strikes and shelling from Russian forces, stating that over 2,000 ceasefire violations were recorded. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky echoed these claims, condemning Moscow’s actions.

The Kremlin, on the other hand, rejected Ukraine’s allegations, insisting that Ukrainian forces initiated the attacks and that Russian forces merely responded.

Trump has repeatedly argued that the U.S. should push both sides toward an agreement, though his proposed pathway remains vague. His latest comments have sparked mixed reactions, with critics questioning the realism of his expectations given the ongoing hostilities and deep-rooted geopolitical tensions.
