London, Jun 12 (V7N) – Britain's Defence Secretary John Healey has resigned following months of growing tensions over military spending and defence budget allocations within the government.
Healey formally submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday (June 11), exposing deep policy disagreements within the Labour-led administration over balancing defence expenditure and public welfare spending.
In his resignation letter, Healey accused the government of failing to allocate sufficient resources to the national defence sector. He argued that the current administration had not provided the military funding necessary to maintain the country's security amid increasing global instability, including the ongoing war in Ukraine and other geopolitical challenges.
Healey also expressed concern that inadequate defence funding could undermine the United Kingdom's ability to respond effectively to emerging security threats.
Responding to the resignation, Prime Minister Starmer described the decision as "sad" and thanked Healey for his service to the country. In a letter, the prime minister praised the outgoing defence secretary's contributions during his tenure and wished him well for the future.
The government moved quickly to fill the vacancy, appointing Dan Jarvis as the new Defence Secretary within hours of Healey's departure. Jarvis, a former security minister and ex-Army officer, now faces the challenge of maintaining military readiness, addressing concerns within the armed forces, and ensuring national security amid ongoing budget constraints.
The resignation comes at a time when European governments are facing increasing pressure to strengthen defence capabilities in response to evolving global security threats.
