Kathmandu, July 31 (V7N)- At least three people have been killed in violent clashes between Hindu and Muslim communities in southern Nepal, prompting authorities to impose curfews in several districts to control the situation.
The local administration on Thursday (July 30) imposed curfews in Sunsari, Sarlahi, Parsa and Janakpur districts as violence spread and efforts were made to restore law and order. Hundreds of additional security personnel, including army members, have been deployed in the affected areas.
According to local sources, the first clash took place in Sunsari district over a religious festival. The violence later spread as angry mobs attacked and set fire to government offices, shopping centers and police posts.
Police used tear gas and opened fire to bring the situation under control. During the incident, a farmer named Om Prakash Mehta was killed, while several others, including Joy Prakash Mehta, were injured. Joy Prakash later died while receiving treatment on Thursday.
Another person, Ganesh Yadav, died from gunshot injuries in Siraha district, raising the total death toll to three.
Nepali President Ram Chandra Paudel expressed deep concern over the violence and urged political parties, civil society and citizens to maintain social unity, communal harmony, friendship and tolerance.
