Dhaka, Aug 03 (V7N) – Australia has announced an additional A$25.25 million in humanitarian assistance for Rohingya refugees and host communities in Bangladesh, reaffirming its long-term commitment to supporting those affected by the prolonged displacement crisis.
The announcement was made by the Australian High Commission in Dhaka on Monday (August 3) following the signing of a funding agreement with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
The Australian High Commissioner said the new funding reflects Australia's continued commitment to assisting Bangladesh in addressing the Rohingya crisis while standing alongside displaced people. He added that Australia will continue to provide humanitarian support in close coordination with international partners.
According to the High Commission, the latest contribution forms part of Australia's three-year humanitarian assistance package worth A$370 million aimed at responding to the ongoing humanitarian situation in Myanmar and Bangladesh.
Since the beginning of the Rohingya crisis in 2017, Australia has provided more than A$1.25 billion in humanitarian assistance to support refugees and affected communities.
The newly announced funding will strengthen essential humanitarian services for Rohingya refugees living in camps in Cox's Bazar. The assistance will support key sectors, including protection, education, healthcare, shelter and livelihood programmes.
Australia remains one of the major international donors supporting humanitarian efforts for the Rohingya population and the communities hosting them in Bangladesh.
