Tehran, Aug 06 (V7N)- Iran has reached an agreement with Oman to establish a new route for international shipping through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, with maritime traffic to be managed through joint coordination between the two countries.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghei confirmed the agreement on Wednesday but did not disclose detailed terms of the arrangement.
Providing further information, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the new shipping route would serve as a temporary measure and is expected to remain operational for the next two to four months.
Despite the agreement, Baghei cautioned that the arrangement does not guarantee completely safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
He said continued uncertainty remains due to the economic and military blockade imposed by the United States, which he said continues to affect maritime security in the region.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said negotiations with Iran are progressing positively and expressed optimism that full-scale international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could resume as early as Thursday.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas exports pass, remains a focal point of regional tensions, with global markets closely monitoring diplomatic efforts to restore normal shipping operations.
