Karachi, Aug 06 (V7N)- Supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) staged protests in Karachi on Thursday to mark three years since the imprisonment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, leading to clashes with police.
According to local reports, police used tear gas and batons to disperse protesters after demonstrations intensified in parts of the city. Several PTI supporters were detained during the operation.
Protesters responded by throwing bricks and stones at police, triggering violent confrontations that left the area tense for several hours. Despite the crackdown, PTI supporters regrouped and continued chanting anti-government slogans.
Imran Khan, who also captained Pakistan to victory in the 1992 Cricket World Cup, has been in prison since August 5, 2023. He is serving a 14-year prison sentence in a corruption case.
Khan and his party have consistently rejected the charges, describing them as politically motivated and aimed at keeping him out of politics.
The Pakistani government, however, maintains that Khan's release is a matter for the courts and that any decision regarding his imprisonment will be determined through the legal process.
The latest demonstrations come amid continuing political tensions in Pakistan, where PTI supporters have repeatedly called for Khan's release and fresh national elections.
