Washington, Aug 14 (V7N)- US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant has warned that Washington is preparing unprecedented economic sanctions against Iran, describing the planned measures as unlike anything previously imposed on a country.
Qatar-based media outlet Al Jazeera reported the remarks on Friday (August 14).
Bessant said new announcements are expected next week, adding that the United States plans to impose measures that have never been seen before in the history of economic isolation.
He said the planned measures would be combined with the ongoing blockade around the Strait of Hormuz, creating an unprecedented campaign of economic pressure on Tehran.
According to the Treasury Secretary, the measures would prevent goods and ships from entering or leaving Iranian ports.
The warning comes amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran over control of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz and the broader military situation in the region.
The proposed sanctions would further intensify economic pressure on Iran as the two sides remain locked in a dispute over the waterway and attempts to revive a broader agreement have so far failed.
