Madrid, Sep 18 (V7N)- Severe flooding triggered by continuous heavy rainfall has battered Spain's Catalonia and Valencia regions, leaving at least one person dead after being swept away by powerful currents, according to the BBC.
Floodwaters have submerged roads and swept away vehicles in several areas. Emergency services in Catalonia received more than 850 calls and recorded over 500 incidents linked to the severe weather.
The flooding has also disrupted public transportation and travel. Several metro stations in Barcelona have been closed, while train and air services have been affected.
Some areas recorded more than 70 millimeters of rain within just 30 minutes, prompting authorities to issue warnings over the dangerous conditions.
Spain's national weather agency issued a red alert for coastal areas of Barcelona and urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, describing the situation as critical.
Meanwhile, data from the Valencian Association of Meteorology (AVAMET) showed that more than 70 millimeters (2.76 inches) of rainfall was recorded within half an hour in several municipalities across Valencia province.
Emergency services in Valencia reported 478 incidents related to rainfall and flooding.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as heavy rain threatens to cause further flooding and disruption across the affected regions.
