Aleppo, Sep 21 (V7N)- At least four people were injured after a series of powerful explosions struck a Syrian army site near the town of Al-Eis in southern Aleppo province early Monday.
The explosions occurred at a military site in the Al-Hadaba area, west of Al-Eis. Syrian state news agency SANA said authorities were investigating the cause of the incident.
According to Syria's Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management, one civilian was injured by shrapnel, two suffered temporary breathing difficulties and another was injured in a traffic accident while attempting to flee the area.
Aleppo civil defense operations chief Faisal Mohammad Ali said continuing explosions initially prevented emergency teams from reaching the site. Rescue teams later entered the area and evacuated the four injured people.
Civil Defense teams also evacuated nearby residents, while authorities closed roads leading to the site, including the Aleppo-Damascus highway, as a precaution.
Aleppo Governor Azzam al-Gharib urged residents to remain indoors and avoid approaching the area. Hospitals, ambulances and emergency teams were placed on alert as explosions continued at the site.
The Emergency and Disaster Management Ministry warned residents to stay away because of the potential danger from debris and unexploded ordnance. Authorities said the area would remain restricted until it was considered safe.
A resident of Aleppo's Hamdaniyeh neighborhood told AFP that a powerful explosion could be heard from the city and that large flames were visible from a rooftop.
The blast is the latest in a series of explosions at Syrian military facilities and weapons storage sites. An explosion at a military site in Deir Ezzor on September 18 killed 11 people, while an explosion at a weapons depot in Idlib earlier this month killed 14 and injured 11.
Authorities have not announced a cause for Monday's explosions, and there has been no official attribution to an external attack. Rescue and security operations remain underway at the site.
