Washington, Sep 22 (V7N)- The United States has warned that Iranian airlines could be effectively shut out of international operations from Wednesday, September 23, as Washington expands its sanctions campaign against Tehran.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent issued the warning during an interview with CNBC on Monday, saying all Iranian airlines would be shut down globally from September 23 through the threat of secondary sanctions against companies that continue providing services to them.
The measures would extend beyond the airlines themselves to airports, fuel suppliers, ticketing companies and other businesses involved in supporting Iranian carriers.
Bessent warned that companies providing fuel, landing services or ticket sales to Iranian aircraft could face exclusion from the US dollar-based financial system.
The warning represents an escalation of Washington's economic pressure on Tehran amid the continuing US-Iran confrontation.
Earlier this month, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on 36 targets linked to Iran's aviation sector. The measures targeted Iranian airlines as well as foreign intermediaries, front companies and other entities accused by Washington of supporting Iran's aviation industry.
The Treasury said the September 8 action targeted remaining Iranian airlines and networks allegedly involved in the procurement of aircraft, aviation equipment and other technology.
Bessent has also warned companies in other countries that continuing to provide services to Iranian carriers could expose them to US secondary sanctions.
The latest measures could further restrict Iran's international air connectivity, as foreign airports and aviation service providers face pressure to avoid dealings with Iranian carriers.
The announcement comes as the Trump administration continues its broader campaign to restrict Iran's access to international finance and key economic sectors.
