Trump shared a map early Saturday showing the waterway with the name “Trump Strait,” shortly after Iran proposed a seven-day plan to reopen the strait for commercial shipping if Washington meets a set of conditions. ABC News+1
The Iranian proposal was presented by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to US negotiators through intermediaries on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Under the proposal, Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days and resume negotiations on its nuclear programme. Tehran has linked the plan to a ceasefire and the lifting of US military and economic pressure.
Iran has called for the lifting of the US naval blockade of its ports, easing of sanctions affecting its oil exports and a regional ceasefire that would include Lebanon. Iranian officials say these measures would allow the country to increase crude oil exports and ease economic pressure.
Speaking at the UN on Friday, Araghchi said Iran was prepared to move forward if Washington demonstrated the necessary commitment to an agreement. He said the process could begin once the United States accepts the conditions.
However, Trump has rejected Iran’s proposal, saying the terms were unacceptable. The US president has also claimed that the United States has control over the strategically important waterway. The Guardian
The White House has said that “constructive discussions” with Iran are taking place through intermediaries. At the same time, US officials cited by the Wall Street Journal have reportedly expressed doubts about whether Tehran would meet Washington ’s demands.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a major global energy chokepoint. Commercial traffic through the waterway has fallen sharply amid the ongoing conflict, although some oil shipments continue to pass through the strait. Trump’s use of “Trump Strait” is not an official international renaming of the waterway. It is the name displayed on the map he posted on his social-media account.
The move follows Trump's previous efforts to promote alternative names for geographic locations. In January 2025 , he ordered the US government to use “Mount McKinley” for Alaska's Denali and “Gulf of America” for the Gulf of Mexico in federal usage.
With Iran still waiting for a formal response through intermediaries, the future of the Strait of Hormuz and the broader diplomatic process between Washington and Tehran remains uncertain.
