Washington, Sep 28 (V7N)- US President Donald Trump said American officials have been in contact with mediators as Washington and Tehran face renewed diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Monday, Trump confirmed that US officials had spoken with mediators but did not provide further details. Reuters also reported that separate US and Iranian discussions with mediators were expected around an amended version of Iran’s seven-day proposal.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has remained in New York for discussions with mediators. Reports said Qatari mediators were involved in efforts to facilitate indirect communication between Tehran and Washington.
The diplomatic activity comes after Iran proposed steps that would end hostilities and facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for measures including sanctions relief and the resumption of nuclear negotiations.
Trump rejected the proposal publicly over the weekend but said he expected US negotiators to hold further talks with Iran this week.
At the same time, Trump maintained a forceful tone regarding the conflict. He told reporters that the United States would win the war with Iran “very soon” and said the conflict would be resolved one way or another.
Trump also said energy prices would fall after the conflict ends. Oil prices had risen following his rejection of Iran’s proposal, although prices later eased as markets assessed the possibility of mediated negotiations and changes in regional oil exports.
The latest diplomatic contacts come as the Strait of Hormuz remains a central issue in efforts to reach an agreement. Iran has linked any reopening of the waterway to its conditions, while Washington has continued to press Tehran over nuclear issues and other security concerns.
