Dhaka, Nov 03 (V7N)- US Vice President JD Vance has said progress has been made in negotiations aimed at ending the conflict with Iran, expressing optimism that an agreement could be reached through diplomatic efforts.
Speaking to reporters on Monday (November 2), Vance said both he and President Donald Trump remained hopeful about the possibility of resolving the conflict through dialogue, according to Anadolu Agency.
Vance revealed that he had spoken with Trump about the negotiations approximately an hour before addressing the media. He acknowledged that Iran's behaviour could sometimes be unpredictable but said meaningful progress had been achieved in the discussions.
However, he cautioned that it remained uncertain whether further progress would be made. Responding to a question about a possible deadline for Iran concerning future attacks, Vance said no such deadline had been established.
He stressed that Washington's primary objective was to ensure Iran could not restart its nuclear programme. For that purpose, he said Tehran would need to provide firm and verifiable guarantees.
Earlier on Monday, Trump also expressed optimism about reaching an agreement with Iran while attending an event marking the reopening of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington.
The US president claimed that Iran was interested in a deal to end the conflict and suggested that an agreement was achievable. He also said Iran had requested Washington to stop attacks targeting its leadership and indicated that the United States would honour the request.
Tensions in the Middle East have continued since the United States and Israel launched attacks against Iran on February 28. Tehran subsequently responded with retaliatory strikes across the region.
Although diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran led to the signing of a memorandum of understanding in June, significant disagreements remain between the two sides.
Key outstanding issues include regional security arrangements, Iran's nuclear programme and the movement of vessels through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Vance's latest remarks signal continued diplomatic engagement between the two countries, although a comprehensive agreement to end the conflict has yet to be secured.
