New Delhi, June 20, 2024 — Delhi, the capital of India, is reeling under an intense heatwave that has claimed at least 20 lives in the last 48 hours. According to the Times of India, 45 more people are currently on life support at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

The heatwave has led to a significant increase in the number of admissions for heat stroke in various hospitals across the city. Dr. Ajay Chauhan from Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital told the BBC, "I have been working in this hospital for 13 years, and I have never faced such a situation. This is the first time in my career that I have signed so many death certificates due to heat stroke."

Health Minister JP Nadda has reviewed the preparedness of government hospitals and directed officials to establish special heatwave units to provide better care for affected patients.

The ongoing heatwave in Delhi has exacerbated the water crisis and increased electricity demand, leading to power outages. The minimum temperature reached a record 33.8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday night, with the city's power demand hitting an all-time high.

Authorities have warned residents to take precautions as the extreme heat is expected to continue.
