New Delhi, June 26, 2024 — For the first time in nearly five decades, India has witnessed an election for the post of Speaker in the Lok Sabha. Om Birla, the candidate from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), has been re-elected as Speaker.

In a session held today, Wednesday (June 26), Om Birla secured his position through a voice vote, marking his second term as Speaker of the Lok Sabha. With the NDA holding 293 seats, his victory was anticipated. Following the election, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and newly appointed Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi extended their congratulations to Birla. Congress leader K Suresh had contested against Birla as the candidate of the opposition 'India' alliance.

Elections for the Speaker's post are rare in Indian history. The last such election took place in 1976. Prior to this, voting for the position occurred in 1952 and 1967. Traditionally, the post of Deputy Speaker is offered to the opposition, but the NDA coalition has also fielded a candidate for this position, prompting the Congress-led 'India' alliance to contest the Speaker's election.

Om Birla's re-election underscores the strength of the NDA alliance in the Lok Sabha. His leadership is expected to continue guiding the parliamentary proceedings with the experience and authority he has demonstrated during his previous term. The re-election also highlights the evolving political dynamics in India, where traditional roles and expectations are increasingly being challenged and redefined.
