Cairo, 06 July 2024 - Egypt's newly appointed Education Minister, Mohamed Abdel Latif, is under scrutiny following allegations that his PhD degree is fraudulent. This revelation comes shortly after the new government was sworn in on Wednesday, with substantial changes in ministerial positions, excluding the Prime Minister.

Middle East Eye reported on Saturday, July 6, that Abdel Latif's biography, published on the official government website, lists two postgraduate degrees from the United States, including a PhD from Cardiff City University and a Master's degree from Lawrence University.

However, Egyptian journalist and fact-checker Hossem El-Hendi discovered that Cardiff City University, where Abdel Latif claimed to have earned his PhD, is a bogus institution. El-Hendi noted that the university lacks a physical campus and is known for issuing counterfeit documents and certificates. Cardiff City University is not associated with any legitimate educational institution in Cardiff, UK.

This controversy has raised questions about the vetting process for high-level government appointments in Egypt and cast a shadow over the credibility of the new education minister. The Egyptian government has yet to issue an official response to these allegations.
