Kathmandu, 06 July 2024 - In a significant political development, the Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist-Leninist) or CPN UML, led by former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, has shifted its alliance to the Nepali Congress. This move signals the imminent fall of the Maoist leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal, also known as Prachanda, from his position as Prime Minister.

Until recently, Dahal's government was supported by the CPN UML. However, the withdrawal of this support and the formation of a new alliance with the Nepali Congress has created an atmosphere of political instability. According to a report by BBC News, CPN UML's deputy general secretary and former foreign minister of Nepal, Pradeep Jhabali, revealed that negotiations between Prime Minister Dahal and the Nepali Congress had been ongoing for the past month, contributing to an atmosphere of mistrust.

Jhabali noted that when the Nepali Congress rejected Prachanda's proposal, CPN UML initiated discussions for an alliance with the Nepali Congress instead.

Currently, Dahal's Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) holds only 32 seats in Nepal's 275-seat Pratinidhi Sabha or parliament. In contrast, the CPN UML, under Oli's leadership, has 78 seats, making the shift in alliance a decisive factor in the country's political landscape.

The new political alignment is expected to bring significant changes to Nepal's governance and could lead to a reconfiguration of power within the country's parliament.
