Kathmandu, July 7 2024 – Nepal, often referred to as the daughter of the Himalayas, has been devastated by heavy floods and landslides, resulting in the deaths of at least 47 people in the western region, including the capital, Kathmandu.

The Bagmati and Vishnumati rivers have overflowed, inundating vast areas and triggering an emergency alert. Over 600 houses are now at risk of river erosion, and many streets in Kathmandu are flooded. Several houses have collapsed, severely disrupting public life.

Landslides in several provinces have claimed at least 24 lives. Another 19 people have died due to lightning strikes during the severe weather. The ongoing heavy rains have affected various districts, including Koshi and Karnali, leading to widespread flooding and damage.

Nepal’s weather department has predicted continued severe weather for the next few days, exacerbating the risk of further floods and landslides. This seasonal monsoon period often results in significant loss of life and property damage annually in the region.

Authorities are on high alert, working to provide emergency assistance to affected areas and evacuate residents at risk. Efforts are also underway to clear debris and restore disrupted services.

Nepal faces recurrent monsoon-related disasters each year, with floods and landslides causing substantial human and material losses. The government and local communities continually strive to improve preparedness and response measures to mitigate the impact of such natural disasters.

The situation remains critical as the nation braces for further adverse weather conditions, with emergency services mobilized to assist those in need.
