London, 10 July - After Bangabandhu's granddaughter Tulip Siddique, another woman of Bangladeshi origin has been appointed to the British cabinet. Rushanara Ali has been given the responsibility of policy development for the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government Housing Affairs of the UK Government.

Rushanara Ali was elected as an MP for the fifth consecutive time from the Labor Party, representing the Bethnal Green and Bow constituency in London. In the recently concluded British general election, she secured 15,896 votes, defeating her nearest rival, Ajmal Masroor, an independent candidate also of Bangladeshi origin, by a margin of about 1,700 votes.

Previously, Rushanara Ali served as a shadow minister in the opposition cabinet. Her name has been under discussion for a ministerial position ever since the Labor government came to power, and her appointment marks a significant milestone for individuals of Bangladeshi heritage in British politics.
