Yangon, Sep 15 (V7N) – The death toll in Myanmar has climbed to at least 74 following catastrophic floods caused by heavy rains triggered by Super Typhoon Yagi. Thousands have been displaced, with rescue efforts continuing as officials search for those missing amidst the widespread devastation.

According to the Global New Light of Myanmar, 74 people have lost their lives, and 89 others are missing since the floods began on Friday. The storm has affected large parts of Southeast Asia, including Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand, with a combined death toll of at least 350 due to flooding and landslides caused by the typhoon.

The floods in Myanmar have forced more than 235,000 people to flee their homes, destroying over 65,000 houses and severely damaging five dams. Rescue operations are ongoing, with local authorities and international aid agencies working to provide relief to the affected populations.

The disaster has added to the woes of a country already in turmoil following the 2021 military coup. Widespread violence has erupted as resistance groups and ethnic armed factions battle the ruling junta. Over 270,000 people have been displaced by the ongoing conflict, and the combination of political instability and the economic crisis has exacerbated the suffering caused by the recent natural disaster.

Myanmar continues to grapple with the aftermath of the storm, which has intensified the already dire situation for millions across the country. The government has called for increased international assistance as it struggles to deal with the dual crises of political conflict and natural disasters.
