The poultry industry in Bangladesh faces a significant threat as the country grapples with soaring temperatures amidst a relentless heatwave. Across 51 out of 64 districts, temperatures have surged to alarming levels, ranging from 40°C to over 43°C, with forecasts predicting a further rise to 44°C-45°C by mid-May.

Heat stress poses a serious challenge to livestock, particularly in the poultry sector, resulting in reduced production and economic losses. Chickens are experiencing heat stress, leading to slowed growth and decreased egg and meat production. Mortality rates have also risen due to extreme heat conditions and power outages.

Experts and farmers alike are deeply concerned about the situation. Dr. Aminul Haque from the Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute highlights a significant impact on the poultry industry, citing increased chicken deaths and long-term effects from prolonged heat exposure.

Farmers report widespread issues such as heatstroke, kidney failure, and respiratory problems among chickens. Mamotaj Begum, a broiler farmer, expresses worry over decreased growth rates and increased mortality, while others like Syed Abdul Munayem and Abu Nayeem share similar concerns about egg production and losses.

Reduced feed intake exacerbates the problem, with each bird consuming less feed than usual, resulting in lower egg production and increased feed conversion ratios. Savar Upazila Livestock Officer Dr. Sajedul Islam emphasizes the adverse effects of reduced feed intake on poultry health and productivity.

Mahbubur Rahman, President of the Breeders Association of Bangladesh, warns of a potential 25% decrease in egg and broiler chicken production, leading to a supply shortfall if conditions persist. Prof. Dr. Md Elias Hossain from Bangladesh Agricultural University underscores the industry's challenges, predicting market price surges due to decreased production levels.

The looming threat of mass poultry deaths could have far-reaching consequences for farmers and consumers alike, with significant economic implications. With the poultry sector facing a critical juncture, stakeholders are bracing for potential market disruptions and economic strain in the months ahead.
