Oct 18 (V7N) — Rumours about Lionel Messi’s potential retirement have been circulating since his triumphant World Cup win in Qatar. Although his fitness could allow him to compete in another World Cup, Messi appears to be moving in a different direction, choosing to enjoy the remainder of his career rather than aiming for the 2026 tournament.
Messi, now the most decorated footballer in history with 46 club and international trophies, was recently honoured with the America Legend Award by Spanish media outlet Marca. During the award ceremony, Messi emphasised that his focus has shifted from setting competitive goals to enjoying the sport he loves.
Speaking at the event, Messi said, "Time will tell. I don't like to look too far ahead. I just want to enjoy each day and feel happy playing at this level."
At 37, Messi continues to perform at the highest level, dispelling any doubts about his longevity in the sport. In Argentina’s recent match against Bolivia at the Estadio Mas Monumental, Messi was instrumental in 5 of the 6 goals, scoring a hat-trick—his 10th in international football. His performance following a lengthy absence due to an ankle injury highlighted his ability to defy age.
Addressing his future, Messi stated, "I feel fulfilled doing what I love the most—playing football. That means more to me than setting goals for the 2026 World Cup. I prefer to live in the present and enjoy each day."
Messi recently added another trophy to his collection, the Supporters' Shield with Inter Miami, marking the club's biggest achievement in Major League Soccer. While the trophy may not carry the same weight as his previous accolades, it holds special significance for Messi.
"When I decided to come to Inter Miami, it wasn't for leisure," Messi explained. "I came to help grow this club and win titles. We’re making progress, and I’m committed to doing more."
As Messi continues his journey with Inter Miami, his focus remains on finding joy in the sport rather than chasing additional milestones. Whether or not he participates in the 2026 World Cup, Messi’s legacy as one of the greatest footballers of all time is already secure.
