Oct 28, V7N- Egypt has proposed a two-day ceasefire in Gaza aimed at exchanging Israeli hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi made this announcement during a press conference alongside Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, suggesting that such a pause could lead to more comprehensive negotiations within ten days to pursue a permanent ceasefire. This proposal comes amidst ongoing negotiations in Doha, where U.S., Qatari, and Egyptian officials have been involved, with CIA and Mossad directors in attendance.

The ceasefire would represent an attempt to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where intense Israeli air and ground operations have led to escalating casualties. Reports indicate that Israeli airstrikes continue to target areas like Jabalia, Beit Hanoun, and Beit Lahiya, with significant civilian tolls, including a recent school strike in Shati camp. According to Gaza’s health ministry, the total death toll has reached approximately 43,000.

The United Nations has described the situation in northern Gaza as "unbearable," with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemning the lack of adherence to international humanitarian standards. Israel asserts it complies with these standards and has attributed aid distribution issues to Hamas interference, while Hamas denies using civilians as shields.
