Republicans were nearing a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives on Saturday, positioning them to support President-elect Donald Trump’s agenda when he returns to office in January. According to Edison Research, Republicans had secured 213 seats out of the 435 in the House, after projecting that Representative Dan Newhouse would hold Colorado's 3rd district. This leaves Republicans only five seats away from a House majority, giving them a powerful legislative advantage if they secure it, especially following their recent win in the Senate.

So far, Democrats hold 205 seats and would need to claim 13 of the 17 remaining contested seats to regain control of the House. With many of these seats located in competitive districts in Western states where vote counting is proceeding more slowly, results may take additional time.

Republican senators are also preparing to elect their leader for 2025, with John Thune, John Cornyn, and Rick Scott in the running. Senators Bill Hagerty and Rand Paul endorsed Scott, opposing the more senior Thune and Cornyn, who have been viewed as favorites. Cornyn pledged that if chosen, he would maintain continuous Senate sessions until Trump’s cabinet confirmations are completed, signaling a no-break stance to expedite the process.

If Republicans do secure both chambers, they could facilitate a policy agenda focused on tax cuts, reduced government spending, energy deregulation, and stronger border security.
