Colombo, Nov 19 (V7N) — Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has reappointed Harini Amarasuriya as Prime Minister following his coalition's sweeping victory in the general elections. The announcement came during a swearing-in ceremony on Monday.
Veteran politician Vijitha Herath has also been reappointed as Foreign Minister. According to a report by The Washington Post, the left-wing coalition led by Dissanayake secured a significant majority, winning 159 out of 229 seats in parliament.
This victory follows Dissanayake's election as president in September, which ended decades of family-dominated politics in Sri Lanka. At that time, his coalition, the National People's Power (NPP), held only three seats in parliament. Early elections held on November 13 allowed the NPP to consolidate its position and form a strong government.
While the new cabinet has been partially announced, the finance minister’s position remains vacant. This strategic delay indicates that further key appointments are likely in the coming days.
Dissanayake’s presidency and his coalition's majority in parliament mark a transformative moment in Sri Lankan politics, as the nation shifts from traditional political dynasties to a progressive left-wing governance model.
