Dhaka, Nov 26 (V7N) – European Union Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller has reaffirmed the EU's commitment to eradicating all forms of gender-based violence and ensuring that women and girls have access to safe spaces in their homes, workplaces, and public environments.

"We are pleased to collaborate with our Bangladeshi partners and the Government to uphold zero tolerance for violence in any form, anywhere, and at any time," said Miller at the launch of the SHIKHA project on Tuesday.

The EUR 4.8 million initiative, launched by the EU in partnership with Brac, aims to create violence-free public and private spaces while addressing bullying and sexual harassment. The project coincides with the global "16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence 2024" campaign.

Brac will lead the implementation of SHIKHA, working alongside Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) and Young Power in Social Action (YPSA). The signing ceremony was held at the EU Delegation office in Dhaka, attended by Ambassador Miller and Brac Executive Director Asif Saleh.

Saleh emphasized Brac's commitment to supporting Bangladesh in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, particularly SDG5, which focuses on gender equality and the elimination of violence against women and girls.

The four-year SHIKHA initiative will address gender-based violence in workplaces, public spaces, the transport sector, educational institutions, and digital platforms. Its objectives include legislative advocacy, better law enforcement, and addressing harmful gender stereotypes and social norms.

Targeting systematic change, the project will impact 250 workplaces, 270 educational institutions, and various public and digital spaces across districts including Dhaka, Gazipur, Chittagong, Barisal, Narayanganj, and Rajshahi.

Through close collaboration with the government, SHIKHA seeks to create safer, more inclusive environments for women and girls, driving progress toward a gender-equal society in Bangladesh.
