Dhaka, Mar 18 (V7N) – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially joined Truth Social, the social media platform owned by US President Donald Trump, becoming one of the few world leaders to create an account on the platform.
In his first post, Modi shared a photo from his 2019 visit to Houston, where he was seen with Trump. The Prime Minister wrote, "I am delighted to join Truth Social," marking his entrance onto the platform.
Launched in 2022 by Trump, Truth Social was initially created as an alternative communication channel after the former president was banned from Twitter and Facebook. The platform, which is owned by Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG), went public in March 2024. Trump currently holds 57% of the company's shares.
Modi's Truth Social account currently follows both President Trump and Vice President JD Vance. As of 3:30 am Bangladesh time on Monday, he had garnered 21,500 followers. On the same day, Trump shared a link to an interview with Modi conducted by Lex Friedman, where Modi discusses his life, the 2002 Gujarat riots, and India’s relations with China.
Functionally similar to Twitter, Truth Social refers to posts as "truths," shares as "retruths," and ads as "sponsored truths." Despite its unique approach, Truth Social remains less popular compared to other social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter). According to Bloomberg, Truth Social's traffic is 400 times less than that of X. In 2024, TMTG reported a revenue of only $3.6 million, but faced a $400 million loss.
Despite these challenges, President Trump’s Truth Social account has gained 9.28 million followers, a far cry from his 87 million followers on X.
