Bangkok, Apr 14 (V7N) – Thailand ushered in the New Year with the vibrant and traditional Songkran festival, famously celebrated with its water-splashing festivities. One of the biggest events took place on Khao San Road in Bangkok, where locals and tourists gathered on Sunday to take part in the colorful celebration.
Despite facing a severe heat wave this April, the scorching temperatures couldn’t dampen the festive spirit. The streets were filled with men, women, and children, many donning thick goggles, gloves, and colorful outfits, all armed with water guns to joyfully drench one another. Laughter echoed through the streets as the crowd danced to music and joined in water fights, creating a lively, carnival-like atmosphere.
Songkran is Thailand’s biggest and most cherished festival, marking the beginning of the Thai New Year. Traditionally, the splashing of water is seen as a symbol of purification and renewal, washing away misfortunes of the past year and welcoming blessings for the year ahead.
While modern celebrations often include high-energy entertainment and large crowds, the cultural and spiritual roots of Songkran remain deeply significant to Thai people. Alongside street festivities, many also visit temples to make offerings and perform ritual cleansing of Buddha statues.
This year, despite the record-breaking heat, the festival once again highlighted the resilience, unity, and joyous spirit of Thailand and its people.
