Nigeria, Jun 01 (V7N) – A devastating road accident has claimed the lives of at least 21 people, all of whom were athletes, in southwestern Nigeria. The tragic incident occurred when a bus carrying sports personnel fell off a bridge.
According to a report by Turkish news agency Anadolu on Saturday, the bus was returning from the National Sports Festival held in Ogun State. There were 35 passengers on board, mostly athletes and sports officials.
Umar Faggi, chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, confirmed that the bus was transporting athletes back to Kano State when it lost control and plunged off the bridge.
Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressed his deep sorrow over the accident on his X (formerly Twitter) account, stating, “These athletes are the best representatives of our nation. They were skilled, promising, and full of future potential. I am deeply saddened by the news of this tragic accident.”
Survivors of the crash have been admitted to a local hospital and are currently receiving emergency medical treatment.
