Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry has tendered his resignation, confirmed by Guyana's President and current Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Mohammad Irfan Ali. The announcement comes amidst weeks of violent unrest in Haiti, with widespread calls for Henry's departure from office.

Regional leaders convened in Jamaica on Monday to address the escalating political turmoil in Haiti, culminating in Henry's resignation. The news was reported by Al-Jazeera.

The resignation follows a series of violent incidents, including armed rebel attacks on two prisons in the Haitian capital earlier this month. Henry, who was in Kenya at the time to finalize an agreement for the deployment of joint forces in Haiti, faced further challenges as armed groups targeted the airport to thwart his return. Consequently, Henry finds himself stranded in Puerto Rico.

The armed groups, active since the onset of the violence, have persistently demanded Henry's resignation.

Henry assumed office following the assassination of former Haitian President Moise, and Haiti has not held elections since 2016, exacerbating the political instability in the country.
