Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has stirred controversy by suggesting that if former President Donald Trump were to be re-elected, he would withhold funds for Ukraine in its conflict against Russia.
Orbán's remarks came after a meeting with Trump in Florida, where he indicated that Trump wouldn't contribute to Ukraine's fight against Russia. The BBC reported on Monday that Orbán emphasized his stance on withholding support for Ukraine if Trump returns to office.
Trump has previously stated his intention to swiftly end the war between Ukraine and Russia if re-elected, although Orbán did not provide specifics on Trump's plans. The Hungarian Prime Minister has publicly endorsed Trump in the 2024 presidential race, expressing confidence in Trump's leadership.
Speaking on Hungary's MOne television channel, Orbán asserted that Ukraine is reliant on external support, particularly from the US and Europe, to sustain its defense efforts. He emphasized the need for financial and military assistance from the US to prevent the conflict from escalating further.
Orbán suggested that Trump possesses a comprehensive strategy to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict, although Trump has not publicly addressed these comments made by the Hungarian leader.
During his visit to the United States, Orbán notably did not meet with current President Joe Biden, opting instead to meet with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. This move raised eyebrows, as it is uncommon for a foreign leader to prioritize meetings with former presidents over the current administration during official visits to the US.
