Bangkok, Oct 25 (V7N) — Thailand’s Queen Sirikit, the mother of the country’s current monarch King Maha Vajiralongkorn, has passed away. She breathed her last at around 9:21 p.m. local time on Friday (October 24) at a hospital in Bangkok, according to a report by Al Jazeera.
Queen Sirikit had been receiving treatment since 2019 due to multiple health complications. She is survived by one son and three daughters. Preparations are underway for a royal funeral, and her body will be kept at the Dusit Throne Hall of the Grand Palace in Bangkok for the public to pay their respects. The Thai royal family will observe a year-long mourning period in her honor.
Married to King Bhumibol Adulyadej for more than six decades, Queen Sirikit was revered as a symbol of grace and compassion. In her lifetime, she championed initiatives to support rural communities, preserve traditional handicrafts, and protect the environment. She was widely regarded by the Thai people as a motherly figure and a national icon of elegance and service.
