Tripoli, Oct 29 (V7N)- At least 18 migrants have died after a boat capsized off the coast of Libya, while 92 others were rescued alive, according to the Libyan Red Crescent.

The tragic accident occurred late Monday night near the coastal city of Sabratha, located about 76 kilometers west of the capital Tripoli, the organization said on Tuesday (October 28).

Rescue operations were launched immediately after receiving the report, and the survivors were provided with first aid at the scene. The Red Crescent confirmed that the operation continued until the early hours of Tuesday morning and later shared several photos of the rescue efforts on social media.

According to reports, at least 61 bodies have been recovered from the Libyan coast in the past two weeks alone. Over the years, Libya has become a major transit route for migrants seeking to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe, where fatal boat accidents remain alarmingly frequent.
