Abu Dhabi, Jan 25 (V7N) — US-mediated peace talks between Russia and Ukraine concluded without any concrete outcome, as deep disagreements over territorial control continued to block progress, according to a report by CNN News on Sunday.
The two-day trilateral meeting, held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, involved representatives from the United States, Russia, and Ukraine. Despite high-level participation, the talks failed to yield any agreement, particularly on the key issue of territorial ownership.
Ahead of the discussions, Ukraine’s chief negotiator Rustam Umerov stated that Kyiv’s objective was to directly discuss the conditions for a ceasefire and outline the next logical steps toward ending the conflict. However, those goals remained unmet as negotiations stalled.
Sources familiar with the talks said that Moscow and Kyiv remain firmly divided over territorial claims. Russia insists that Ukraine’s eastern industrial regions, including the Donbas, will remain under Russian control. In contrast, Ukraine has categorically rejected any concession of its territory, maintaining that sovereignty is non-negotiable.
The United States was represented by Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former President Donald Trump, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. Their presence highlighted Washington’s continued diplomatic push to broker a resolution to the prolonged conflict.
Although officials indicated that a second round of talks may be held next week, the lack of progress in the initial discussions has raised serious doubts about the effectiveness of the current peace initiative.
