Washington, Jan 30 (V7N) — US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 50 percent tariff on aircraft manufactured in Canada sold in the United States, escalating tensions between the two countries over aviation certification.
According to The Economic Times, Trump’s warning comes after Canada allegedly failed to validate jets made by US manufacturer Gulfstream Aerospace. In response, Trump announced that the United States would revoke the validity of all aircraft manufactured by Canadian manufacturer Bombardier.
On his social media platform Truth Social, Trump stated that in retaliation, America will cancel the certification of all Canadian aircraft, signaling a potential major disruption in North American aircraft trade.
The tensions also appear linked to recent diplomatic engagements. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Chinese President Xi Jinping during a visit to China, prompting Trump to warn that the United States could impose a 100 percent tariff on all Canadian products if Ottawa proceeds with any trade agreement with Beijing.
This development marks another chapter in ongoing trade disputes between the United States and its allies, with potential implications for the aviation and broader manufacturing sectors.
