Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot and seriously injured by a gunman as he left a government meeting on Wednesday afternoon local time. The incident occurred in Handlova, a town northeast of Slovakia's capital, Bratislava.
Reports indicate that Fico was shot at least four times in the stomach and was immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment. The accused attacker was swiftly arrested by the police, although their identity has not been disclosed.
Slovak Parliament Vice Chairman Lubes Blaha confirmed the shooting, but the motive behind the attack remains unclear. The incident took place in front of a community center, as per local news agency TASR. Although video footage showing several individuals rushing to apprehend the attacker surfaced, its authenticity could not be independently verified by the BBC.
In response to the attack, Slovakian President Zuzana Kaputoba condemned the violence and extended her well wishes to Fico. She emphasized that violence has no place within the country's borders.
Fico, a pro-Russian leader, returned to power last September after winning the election. He had promised not to provide further military aid to Ukraine and aimed to improve relations with Russia during his tenure. This stance has drawn criticism and sparked political debates, particularly after his announcement in January to halt military assistance to Ukraine, leading to strained relations with the European Union (EU) and NATO.
The shooting of Prime Minister Fico has shocked the nation and raised concerns about political stability and security in Slovakia. Authorities are actively investigating the incident to determine the motives behind the attack and ensure justice is served.
