Makkah, June 19, 2024 — This year's Hajj pilgrimage has been marred by tragedy as at least 550 pilgrims have died, with heat illness cited as the primary cause. Among the deceased, 323 were Egyptian citizens. The data, reported by Pakistani media outlet Dawn News, was sourced from two Arab diplomats who cited records from the Al-Muaysem Hospital morgue in Makkah.

The diplomats disclosed that intense heat waves were responsible for most of the fatalities. Additionally, the death toll includes at least 60 pilgrims from Jordan.

Saudi authorities have reported that over 2,000 pilgrims are currently receiving treatment for heat-related illnesses. The National Meteorological Center of Saudi Arabia recorded a staggering temperature of 51.8 degrees Celsius at the Grand Mosque of Makkah last Monday, highlighting the severe conditions faced by the pilgrims.

The extreme temperatures and resulting health emergencies have underscored the need for enhanced measures to protect pilgrims during the annual event, which draws millions of Muslims from around the world. Efforts are underway to provide medical assistance and support to those affected by the heat wave.
