Meta announced on Friday that it is lifting restrictions on Donald Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts, which were imposed following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Trump's accounts had been suspended indefinitely shortly after the riot, citing his praise for those involved in the violence.

In February 2023, Meta reinstated Trump's accounts with additional restrictions, warning of penalties for any future policy violations. Now, Meta has removed these heightened suspension penalties, stating that as the Republican Party nominee for President, Trump should be able to communicate politically on their platforms.

Meta emphasized that all US presidential candidates, including Trump, will still be subject to Community Standards that aim to prevent hate speech and incitement to violence. Trump, who was also banned from Twitter and YouTube but had those restrictions lifted last year, now primarily uses his own social media platform, Truth Social, to communicate with his audience. His Facebook profile, with 34 million followers, now includes content originally posted on Truth Social, as well as announcements for rallies and campaign videos.
