The Trump 2024 presidential campaign has accused the Iranian government of hacking its internal communications, citing previous tensions between former President Donald Trump and Iran. The accusation came after reports that Politico received emails containing documents from inside Trump's campaign, including information about running mate JD Vance.
According to Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung, the documents were obtained illegally by foreign sources aiming to interfere with the 2024 election. Trump later posted on his Truth Social app, stating that Microsoft had informed the campaign of the hack, allegedly carried out by Iran. However, Trump claimed that the hackers only accessed publicly available information.
Microsoft researchers had previously reported an attempt by Iranian government-tied hackers to breach the account of a high-ranking official in a U.S. presidential campaign in June, though the identities of the targets were not disclosed. Iran's mission to the United Nations denied any intent to interfere in the U.S. election, describing its cyber capabilities as defensive.
Trump's relations with Iran were notably strained during his presidency, particularly after the U.S. killed Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani and withdrew from the Iran
