Sikkim, August 21 — The NHPC Teesta Stage-Five Power House, a 510 MW hydropower station, collapsed on Tuesday morning following a severe landslide in the region. The landslide occurred in the area surrounding the power house, which had been under threat due to heavy rains in recent days.

Located on the side of a hill near the Teesta River, the power station had been evacuated earlier as a precautionary measure. The evacuation proved crucial, as no casualties have been reported. However, the landslide, which caused the hill above the power station to give way, led to the complete collapse of the adjacent NHPC Teesta Stage-5 dam power station.

A video capturing the dramatic moment when the cliff fell has circulated widely on social media, highlighting the scale of the disaster. In addition to the destruction of the power station, several nearby houses were also damaged.

Local authorities have confirmed that the landslide was triggered by continuous heavy rains in the region. Rescue and relief operations have been launched to assess the damage and provide aid to those affected by the landslide.

The collapse has raised concerns about the vulnerability of infrastructure in the region, particularly in areas prone to natural disasters such as landslides.
